Introduction

Hidden by default, modal elements toggle into view when triggered by a user interaction.

Modal elements only display when needed to display supplemental information or to guide the user through a supplemental task. Once activated, they appear on top of the current page as an overlay. Most often, the user must either complete the task or dismiss the modal before they can continue interacting with the source page.

Hiding content can create issues for accessibility and SEO. Modal elements may also interrupt a user's journey. For these reasons and others, it is insisted that modal elements are deployed thoughtfully and consistently.

While useful, modal elements pose usability risks and must be deployed thoughtfully. We follow a governing logic to make sure modal elements are used consistently and responsibly.

  1. Can it be displayed on the page?
  2. If yes, don't use an modal/overlay component ▪️
  3. If no, continue
  4. Is it informational or interactive?
  5. If informational, continue
  6. If interactive, skip to step 4
  7. Is it a simple definition/instruction or a longer, complex, explanation?
  8. If simple, use a tooltip ▪️
